Stegosauria — the plated dinosaurs that roamed the Jurassic world

Stegosauria were herbivorous dinosaurs famous for their distinctive plates and spikes, living 165–100 million years ago across multiple continents.

When and where

Stegosauria lived during the Middle Jurassic to early Cretaceous, approximately 165 to 100 million years ago. Their fossils appear across the Northern Hemisphere, Africa, and South America. The earliest unequivocal stegosaurians include Adratiklit from Morocco, Bashanosaurus from China, Isaberrysaura from Argentina, and Thyreosaurus from Niger. These herbivores occupied a global footprint before their extinction in the early Cretaceous.

How we know

The first Stegosauria fossils emerged in the 19th century, with Stegosaurus itself named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877. Key specimens come from the Morrison Formation in North America and the Shishugou Formation in China. The distinctive dermal plates and tail spikes (thagomizers) preserved in these fossils reveal their defensive anatomy. Recent discoveries like Bashanosaurus (2022) and Thyreosaurus (2023) continue to refine our understanding of their geographic spread. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stegosauria.

What set it apart

Stegosauria are instantly recognizable by the double row of bony plates along their backs and the pair of long, pointed spikes on their tails. These plates varied in shape—from small nodules in early forms to large, broadened structures in Stegosaurus—and likely served for thermoregulation, display, or defense. Their small heads with leaf-shaped teeth indicate a diet of low-lying vegetation. Unlike their relatives the ankylosaurs, stegosaurs had a more lightweight build and proportionally longer tails, suggesting agility while foraging.
